Women and girls have a special mitzvah to light candles every Friday and Festival eve during the entire year. Girls are encouraged to begin lighting their very own candle as soon as they are able to pronounce the blessing.
The Zohar aptly describes the power that they can access: “When a woman lights the Shabbat candles with joy in her heart, she brings peace into the world, health and happiness to her family, and is blessed with children who brighten the world.”
