In 1974, the Rebbe instituted the Mezuzah Campaign. The Mezuzah on the doorpost protects us when we’re at home and even when we’re away! A Mezuzah must be hand written by a G-d fearing scribe, and placed on the right side of the front entrance (when entering the house), and the right side of the rest of the doorposts (when standing on the side to which the door opens outward). The Mezuzah is affixed in an inclined position on the bottom of the top third of the doorpost. Before it is affixed, we recite the blessing “Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elo-Heinu Melech HaOlam Asher Kid’shanu B’mitzvotav V’tzivanu Likbo-a Mezuzah.”
Since Elul is the last month of the year and immediately precedes Rosh Hashana, the Day of Judgment, it is customary to check our Mezuzos and Tefillin, and correcting any defects that might be found.
